We are happy to announce that the special court set up by the Chief Judge of Abia State at the request of the Centre for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics (CSAAE) to expedite the trial of youths detained in Aba and Umuahia correctional centers for ENDSARS and related offences kicked off today.
CSAAE’s team of pro bono lawyers led by Victor Onwere (Esq.) were at Aba correctional center today to represent the detainees. Four detainees were released today and two of them were arrested during the ENDSARS protest.
The trial continues tomorrow and may last for two weeks. Recall that between August and September, CSAAE’s pro bono lawyers (C-ADVOCATES) combed all the correctional centers in Southeast Nigeria in search of ENDSARS detainees. A total of 78 detainees were identified in Abia State by the pro bono lawyers. Thereafter, our lawyers reached out to the Chief Judge of Abia State to expedite trial for these detainees. The Judge accepted our request.
We thank VOICE (OXFAM) and our founder, Fr. Godswill Agbagwa, for supporting this initiative. Together, we shall make Nigeria a better place where all can find support and encouragement to work hard, live in dignity and feel proud to belong.
