In observance of World Water Day 2024, we revisit a critical concern highlighted by the Center for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics (CSAAE) during their survey of primary schools across Southeast Nigeria. The investigation, spanning from 2021 to 2022, shed light on the profound challenges faced by these educational institutions, particularly regarding the scarcity of clean water.
In alignment with the Universal Basic Education Standard, access to water is pivotal for fostering a conducive learning environment. However, the CSAAE’s research uncovered a sobering reality: numerous primary schools in the area lacked this essential resource.
In a bid to assess the current status quo, CSAAE recently conducted visits to primary schools in Imo State. What they encountered was deeply troubling. Students were witnessed embarking on arduous journeys through villages in search of water, with some unfortunate incidents resulting in accidents along the way. This dire predicament not only hinders their educational pursuits but also poses grave risks to their safety and well-being.
