Rural Education matters: Join the movement for change -C-EDU marks Int’l Day of Education
As part of the activities marking the 2025 International Day of Education, a thought-provoking radio session on Ozisa FM explored the theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in the Automation World.” The discussion emphasized the critical role of education in shaping the future amidst the transformative influence of artificial intelligence while addressing the state of primary schools in rural areas of Imo State.
The session featured Blessing Bodunde, the C-Edu Coordinator, alongside Mr. Nnadozie Obinna, the Socioeconomic Program Officer at CSAAE, and Francisca Ekwonu, the Chief Operating Officer of CSAAE. Together, they shed light on the challenges faced by rural schools in Imo State, supported by findings from a research study conducted between 2021 and 2023 in Southeast Nigeria.

The research revealed significant obstacles to quality education in rural areas, including inadequate infrastructure, a lack of basic facilities, and insufficient support for teachers. Many schools are without perimeter fencing, leaving pupils and teachers vulnerable to external threats. Additionally, the absence of proper WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities forces children to rely on unsafe alternatives, posing serious health risks. A severe shortage of educational materials—such as textbooks, school bags, and sandals—further hinders the learning experience for children in these areas.
The plight of teachers in rural communities was also a major focus of the discussion. Teachers often endure harsh conditions, with minimal resources and inadequate welfare packages. A particularly moving example shared during the session described teachers trekking long distances to school due to insufficient salaries to cover transportation costs. These sobering realities resonated deeply with the audience, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve education in rural communities.
As part of the solutions offered, the team introduced The Back-to-School Pack Initiative, an innovative program by C-EDU designed to provide children with essential school supplies, including writing materials, school bags, sandals, and uniforms. The initiative seeks to alleviate the financial burden on parents, motivate children to stay in school, and enhance the overall learning environment. A passionate call to action was made to government bodies, sponsors, donors, and community stakeholders to support the initiative and ensure its sustainability.

The interactive nature of the session allowed callers to share their insights and suggest solutions. Many highlighted the importance of involving community leaders, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and education supervisors in fostering sustainable educational standards. The contributions from the audience reflected a shared commitment to transforming the state of education in rural Imo State.
The program concluded with an appeal for support through sponsorships and donations to further the impact of the Back-to-School Pack Initiative.
This impactful radio session, part of the broader 2025 International Day of Education celebrations, reinforced the importance of prioritizing education as a tool for empowerment, growth, and societal transformation. The overwhelming response from the audience underscored the relevance of the discussion and the need for urgent action. With collaborative efforts and initiatives like the Back-to-School Pack, the vision of quality education for every child in Imo State is closer to becoming a reality.
