Going Beyond Providing Safe Space for Youths (International Youth Day 2018).

Though providing safe space for youths is the theme for this year’s World Youth Day, youth-focused Non-profit organizations especially those in Africa need to go beyond the rhetoric and get down to action. Recently, I joined an International Non- Profit that not only provides safe space for African youths to air their opinions on national and developmental challenges that are of concern to them but also equips them with relevant skill-sets to critically analyze these challenges and address them through Community Development Projects (CDPs).

Before I forget, the organization is Centre for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics, Inc. (CSAAE). Visit www.csaaeinc.org for more info about the organization.

Currently, there are over 35 CDPs implemented by trainees in the Centre’s Emerging African Leaders Program (ELP) in 21 states across the 6 geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

In Northern Nigeria, a CDP is combating malnutrition among children below the age of 5 in Jos South, Plateau State by teaching their mothers how to make nutritious meals using cheap and locally available foodstuffs. Another prepares secondary school students in rural communities in Kano for JAMB CBT (Computer Based Test) by providing them with free computer training.

In Southern Nigeria, there is a CDP increasing awareness on Human Rights and Child Right ACT among primary and secondary school students in Anambra State. Another is promoting Menstrual Hygiene Management by discouraging use of old clothes, newspaper, and tissues as the substitute for sanitary pads among adolescent girls in Cross River State.

If provided with the necessary support, Nigerian youths can be part of the solution and not the problem. CSAAE has demonstrated this since it commenced its activities in 2013.

Finally, call for application into CSAAE’s Emerging African Leaders Program is still on. Deadline for this application is September 30, 2018. Follow the link to apply: http://bit.ly/join-elp-2018.

Don’t just wish us well (lol). Make a donation to CSAAE today. Your donation will help CSAAE  to make more impacts on more African Youths. Use the links below to make your donation.
